A military coup led by Col Salou Djibo overthrew Niger's president, Mamadou Tandja by breaking into the presidential palace and kidnapped the president who has been ruling Niger for more than a decade. Thousands of supporters filled the streets to back up the military coup in Niamey. The military coup was a result of the controlling decision made by the president when he changed the constitution to increase his legal term limit so he can stay longer in power.
